Turning the Page for Library Support

An awesome video about the Toronto Public Library system and why it needs support.

I think most public libraries (or school libraries for that matter) could say the same. Every so often I see articles about how libraries are dying and how they’re not necessary anymore, but they continue to be a vital resource for their communities–for readers, for families, for educators, for students of all ages, etc. Now more than ever, we need our libraries.

Some good links for the week:

Fellow 2014 debut author and delightful agent-mate Emery Lord on why it’s okay if not everyone loves your book.
I think I’m still too easily scared for Goosebumps.
Definitely too easily scared for the scariest books of all time.
I know it seems like all the great books are banned or challenged, but it sucks when it actually happens to you.
“If you allow [characters] to do what they’re going to do, think and feel what they’re going to think and feel, things start to happen on their own. It’s a beautiful and exciting alchemy.” I love this feeling.
On the other hand, Susan Dennard argues that we all plot/plan/outline to some extent. (She’s got me pegged on the playlists.)
I’m surprised Moby-Dick or Little Women didn’t take it for MA in this list of famous books set in every state.
Great post on friendship in YA, something I’d love to see come to the forefront in more YA titles.
And speaking of best friends, every author needs a good (furry) one.

In middle school, one of my favorite books was The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I must have read it twenty times. Then I found a copy of the VHS and watched that repeatedly, too. There’s a lot of argument pitting books against their movie versions, and for The Outsiders I loved both. So it was awesome to see today’s Letters of Note, in which a school librarian and her students helped bring The Outsiders to Francis Ford Coppola, who ultimately directed the film. The first letter:

Click through to see the full exchange. It’s really heartwarming to see how one librarian aide’s letter helped create a fantastic movie. And it’s a great lesson in never doubting that your voice can make a difference. Maybe it won’t come to anything–but maybe it will.
